Canberra Common or saddleback dolphins range widely throughout the world in warmer temperate and tropical waters, and live in waters all around Australia. They are among the most gregarious of the cetaceans, sometimes congregating in enormous herds of several thousand. They are one of the most beautiful of the delphinidae, with black backs, white underparts and a distinctive figure-of-eight pattern on their flanks. This marking is cream coloured just behind the eye, becoming grey towards the tail. Common dolphins grow to about 6 feet long and are quite robust. They have a well-defined melon and a distinct beak with up to 100 teeth in each jaw. They feed on squids and schools of migrating fishes such as anchovies, herrings and sardines.
